About Digital Ocean
Digital Ocean is a cloud computing platform that lets you rent and run computing resources over the internet—things like virtual servers, managed databases, storage, and networking—so you can host websites, apps, APIs, and other services without owning physical hardware.
Main Services
- Host websites and web apps (from simple sites to production services)
- Deploy APIs / backend services
- Run containers and Kubernetes clusters
- Use managed databases (so you don’t have to maintain DB servers yourself)
- Store and serve files (images, backups, static assets)
Key products you’ll hear about
- Droplets: Digital Ocean’s virtual machines (VMs). This is their classic “rent a server” offering.
- Managed Databases: Hosted PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, etc., with automatic maintenance features.
- App Platform: A “push code and it runs” style service (platform-as-a-service) for web apps.
- Kubernetes (DOKS): Managed Kubernetes so you can run containerized apps at scale.
- Spaces / Object Storage: S3-like storage for files and static content.
- Load Balancers / VPC / Firewalls: Networking tools to run production setups safely.
What Captivate Uses Digital Ocean for
We use Digital Ocean’s Spaces feature to offload media from WordPress websites that are hosted on WPEngine. Offloading media to Digital Ocean Spaces is much more cost effective than paying WPEngine for more storage space.
Websites currently using Digital Ocean to offload media include:
-
- WIFH
- Live on 4 Legs Podcast
- VinylMapper
We also use Digital Ocean’s Droplet feature to host our internal use PagePlucker application.
